Aims of Brno English Centre

(Note: We are currently fully-staffed for September 2009. You are welcome to send us a CV on the off-chance that a vacancy will arise)

While we are of course a business, and like any other business it is our intention to make a profit, we would like to stress that this is not by any means our sole, nor even our primary aim. More than anything else, we are trying (and we believe succeeding) to make a positive contribution to the learning of English in the Czech Republic. This informs our choice of teachers – if you do not have at least a little idealism to go along with the professionalism we require, we are not the school for you.

Courses

In-House Courses:

We offer a variety of General English courses, Exam Preparation courses for the Cambridge exams (CPE, CAE, FCE, ILEC and BEC), as well as courses preparing for the IELTS exams, Business English and company courses.

Our Students

Most of our students are taken either from the world of work, where improving English language skills is a passport to promotion or a better job, or else are students in full-time education at one of the city’s many universities. Their motivation tends to be either academic, in that they want to study English at university, or linked to their career ambitions or a desire to travel (there is a great thirst to see the world).

It is worth noting that many of these students have experienced an education that was rather regimented, with an emphasis on memorising rather than the development of skills and a questioning approach. As a consequence, teachers must help them to adapt to our skills-based approach rather than assuming that they will be able to cope from day one.

Working Conditions (academic year 2009-2010)

Full-time teachers will be required to teach up to 24 lessons per week (and may choose to teach more if available). Each lesson is 45 minutes in length.

To give you some understanding of the cost-of-living in Brno, a reasonable meal at a restaurant will cost from 80 CZK. Rented accommodation (flats) will cost from and 7,000 CZK per month, depending on size, location, number of people sharing, etc.

Career Opportunities:

All our teaching management staff have been promoted internally and this is the way we usually do things, thus we can offer opportunities for advancement for suitably qualified and motivated staff.
